rude policeman!

I have to let this out... As D was busy today, I have to walk Happy alone this evening in the area near our home.  As usual, we met the village dogs and they joined us for a walk, today there's Maria and RJ.  We were happily moving along when, from afar, I spotted this 'rude' policeman with his Malinois dog.  I quickly leashed Happy.  He must have seen me too, because, he stopped in the middle of the bridge (which we have to cross) with his arms folded and his face soooo stern, was like daring me to come forward.  (I wished I have a camera then, so I can take his photo and show it to you.)  Seriously, at that moment when I spotted him, I wanted to turn tail and run away from this nasty guy with a bad attitude, but too bad, he saw me and I weren't about to let him have the satisfaction of feeling smug about it.  (D & I had a bad experience with this policeman.  I'll tell you the story later, first let me tell you what happened this time.)  Instead, I  plucked up my courage and walked towards him with my 'don't mess around with me' walk.  When I almost reached the bridge, he spoke in a very stern manner and voice asking if I am going to cross the bridge, I said yes.  You know what he said to me?  Unbelievable!  He  instructed me to move to the side of the bridge to allow him and his dog to cross over first!  Well, he had ample time to cross the bridge way before I even reached the bridge earlier on! Instead, he chose to stop in the middle of the bridge and waited for me in order to 'get' me.  Poor thing, hope he gets a life soon.  He was very fierce towards me, probably due to the fact that I didn't leashed all the dogs.  This time round, I weren't about to be caught off-guard and be affected by his rudeness and fierceness, I weren't going to let him bully me!  No way Jose! I said in a calm voice, telling him that Maria & RJ are village dogs. (I can only leashed Happy who is mine, which I already did 50 metres away upon seeing him).  I didn't even bother to move to the spot that he indicated earlier.  (After our encounter with him the last time,  I am prepared to verbally retaliate if necessary).  The last time we met him, he was very rude and fierce too.  He reprimanded us for not leashing Maria and that my leash on Happy should be kept tight at only one metre length while passing him and his malinois!  Utterly ridiculous!  To think that he is a professional who trained police dogs, it's hard to believe that he doesn't understand basic dog behaviour. Yet he lectured us on how to handle our dog!  Dogs can sense their handler's reaction and any tension on the leash is felt by them,  the moment you get nervous, tensed up and tightened the leash, they sense it, and it will caused them to react negatively, especially when meeting another dog.  Tensed handler = Tensed Dog.  Professional dog handlers/trainers have always advised that when two dogs meet on leash, it is always good to loosen the leash to let your dog have enough slack to manuever and speak his doggy body language and at the same time to feel secure, knowing that they have enough room to avoid meeting the other dog if they choose to.   In the natural canine world, meeting head-on is a no no... too rude and aggressive in doggy language.  They will always walk in a curved path to meet dogs that they don't know, the size of the curve varies with each dog. In a tight confined space with no room to manuever, some dogs are known to just curve their body in meeting.  Also, when the handler kept a tight leash while dogs meet each other, it will caused the dogs to strain forward (this is a natural reaction), thus resulting in a very aggressive body posture which could results in misunderstanding by the other dog and caused negative reactions.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention, there is another policeman with his dog who patrol this area too.  I think they take turns doing that.  This other policeman is a nice guy, friendly and kind, we like him.  He does not put on any airs with us and he even talked to me the other day while Happy and I were on our way home from our hike.  We encountered him and his Malinois once on our evening walk on a narrow path.  RJ and Maria was with us then, we told him that they are village dogs, he was nice, he said he understood.  We moved on without any confrontation.  I wanted to write him a complimentary letter!  Will probably do so once I get down to it.  On the other hand, the rude and proud policeman who puts on airs just simply tarnished his own cum the reputation of the Police Force!  What can I say! (Loud sigh!)

walking by the coastline

Weather is great, temperature plunged from 29 degree celsius yesterday to about 15 degree this morning. Lovely weather to go for a walk, so I took Happy on the path to the lookout point at Hau Hok Wan again near Sha Lo Wan, passing by San Tau Village.  We took a leisurely 2 hours to complete the 5km plus walk.  This time I brought my camera along and took lots of photos!

pitiful Buddy...

Remember Buddy?  The rookie dog that was abandoned by it's owner when they moved out of the village.  They moved to another village down the road but did not take him with them.  Being a dog, he is faithful and went to his ex-owner's place often to visit them.  Guessed what!  Buddy is physically in a dire state now, about a month ago, we saw him limping badly and asked the lady who was walking him.  (This lady is very kind to the village dogs, she will come to the village and feed the village dogs and walk them whenever she has time-off from her work.  She told us that Buddy was brutally hit by a man in the other village where Buddy's ex-owner lives.  The story went like this.  The cruel man asked Buddy's ex-owner whether Buddy was their dog, the ex-owner denied.  The man then went ahead and hit Buddy.  According to the kind lady's story, there was an eye-witness, it was the ex-owner's domestic helper who refused to come out and identify the cruel man.  The kind lady managed to find an adopter for Buddy in another village, this adopter is known as Mr Yeung. We bumped into him many times walking a limping Buddy.  We thought that Buddy is going to get better, but instead, the last we heard from Mr Yeung was, Buddy was constantly whinning, so he took Buddy to the vet for a checkup.  To his dismay, the vet told him that Buddy is in great pain and have to have surgery done on his hip/leg.  The bone is jutting out and causing Buddy alot of pain.  The surgery will cost about HKD 20,000 plus!!!  Mr Yeung's friends are raising money for Buddy's surgery.  Mr Yeung told us that the cruel man hit Buddy while it was asleep near the ex-owner's house.  My gosh!  such cruelty!  I really hope someone could id him and let the law deal severely with this man!   The latest news we heard, Buddy is scheduled for surgery next week!  Hooray!  We will pray for a sucessful surgery and speedy recovery for Buddy.

Happy has got a job to do.

This morning, I brought Happy for a long easy walk as her left front leg has just recovered from a slight limp.  She probably strained her leg muscle jumping down from a high latch the other day while out on our walk.  After two leg massages, she is okay now!
I put a dog backpack on her, simulating that she has a job to do, she loves it.   She carried her own water and mine as well hahaha... of course, to let her get used to carrying a load, I made it really light and just filled two small bottles with only 200ml of water each and put it on both side of her backpack to balance it out.  As the weather was not very hot and the walk quite easy, this small amount of water was sufficient for us.  She felt important wearing the backpack!  hahaha  Give the dog a job!
The walk was really nice, most part of the path was shady and cool even though the sun was out.  There were some steep slopes along the way, great for conditioning my leg muscle!  :)  Oh I forgot to mention where we walked!  We took the path from Tung Chung to Tai O again, decent cemented path all the way.  This time round, I managed to walk till the look-out point near Hau Hok Wan (almost reaching Sha Lo Wan.)  It took us 40 minutes each way and 1 hour 20 minutes round trip.  At the look-out point, we were able to see aircraft take-off and landing, the whole landing strip and the airport!  Great view...  too bad I forgot about my camera today!  sigh!  Next time!
Happy was complimented on how pretty she looked by two villagers and a hiker. She also received loads of attention from other hikers on how sharp she looked wearing her backpack!  One 'ignorant' lady commented about Happy wearing such a nice jacket!  I wanted to tell her that it is not a jacket, but a backpack, one must be raving mad to let a dog wear a jacket in this weather!!!  But I refrained from doing so...On the other hand, it got me thinking, will the backpack caused Happy to overheat?  I kept a vigilant eye on her and watched her carefully for any signs of heat exhaustion and also let her have as many water breaks as she needed.  She is fine and seemed to enjoy every minute of her 'working' trip!
Below are some photos taken on a previous trip along the same way.

Poor cows!

On our walk this evening, we bumped into the cows again!  :)  This time round, I got to walk right up to it to take some photos.  The brown cow seemed friendlier than the black one!  I was busy snapping away when we noticed a male villager came near and scolded some bad words at the cows!  He was upset with the cows for devouring his produce on a plot of land that he farmed.  He was shooing the cows away.  Hmm.. I hope he won't hurt them.  He told us these cows came from the southern side of the island.  While he was making all these commotion, I noticed Happy quietly and secretly sneaking a few mouthful from a fresh pile of cow poo 'delicacy' !!!!  (She knew she wasn't supposed to do that!)  Sometimes I think she just do it to see our frantic reactions!  I shouted at her and shooed her away from the poo, as we moved on, I turned around and saw Maria feasting on it too!!.  It is a well known though hardly openly-discussed fact that dogs love to eat poo, be it cows, horses, deers, rabbits, dogs, their own and some even human poo, but their all time favorite is cat poo!  Cat poo is the highest in protein due to the cat food they eat, dogs just love them!  Disgusting as it is, these habits exist!  hahahahaha..  they love to roll in smelly dead stuffs, and that includes poo poo too!  To them, it smells heavenly... and ingesting feces is a normal part of their lives, (in the wild, mother dogs will clean up their puppies feces etc) it is usually the human owners that have a problem with that!  hahahaha  Once a dog has a habit of eating feces, it is hard to break this habit, the only way is through management...leash the dogs or be very vigilant when out walking....or even prevent from going to areas with possible poo poo, well, this is pretty impossible around this rural area where there are so many animals around.  It could be possible in a more urban setting where there are no feral animals or stray dogs/cats.  I forgot to mention that we met a super-friendly dog on our walk today.  It is very very rare to meet friendly dogs around this area, most of them are either very territorial or very people-shy.  Not with this dog!  It amazed us by coming right up to us and licked D's hand, he wasn't afraid of us at all.  He didn't do so well with Happy and Maria though.. He was afraid and tried to get away from them.  Here are some photos of the cows (again) and the unusually friendly dog.

North Great Phoenix Stream @ AFCD

It was late morning and I made an impromptu decision to take Happy for an additional walk.  I made it a short and simple 3km walk to the water catchment dam of North Great Phoenix Stream @ AFCD along Tung Chung Road.  Wow, despite the warm weather, the air at AFCD was so cool due to the underground Tung Chung Au water portal? This place is teeming with negative ion... good for health!  Here are some pics of the water catchment dam....

cows!!!

For the last few days, we had been bringing our camera along on our walks in the hopes that we could take some close-up shots of the feral cows I've mentioned before, but to no avail, we did not spot them anywhere in the vicinity. We almost gave up bringing our camera along this evening thinking that it might just be another futile effort. Thank God we decided that we will bring it along one last time this evening! Guess what! We spotted the two feral cows along the 2km path that we often walked!! :) We got to go really close to the feral cows and took some shots of Happy with them.
